About Higuera Ranch
Who doesn’t love childhood sweethearts? Kara and Kevin started dating while performing in an 9th grade musical at Orange County School of the Arts, and they have been an adorable couple ever since. Flash-forward to adulthood, Kevin is now on his way to becoming a doctor, while Kara works as a brand representative for Free People in Los Angeles. After deciding upon a destination wedding, they enlisted the Southern California based planning and design team of Crosby + Jon. The team’s design duo, Krista Jon and Regina Crosby Atkins, started by sending the couple to Higuera Ranch, clean white farm house with rolling hills, an old rustic barn, and a lush green vineyard. It was love at first sight and made the perfect venue for a weekend full of wedding festivities.
Next, Krista and Regina paid a visit to Kara’s office at Free People’s showroom in downtown LA to experience Kara’s style, with the goal of creating a wedding as beautiful and forward-thinking as this young couple. With no shortage of inspiration, Kara and team began by mixing patterns and textures in a color-saturated palette, and applied this aesthetic to the florals, the furnishings, and the custom-made linens.
After a year of planning and designing, the day finally came, and the attention to detail was well worth the effort. From the moment family and friends arrived you could feel the good vibes. Guests were seated in antique church pews from Archive Rentals for a sunset ceremony on a golden hillside. Kara, in a jaw-dropping gown from Rue De Siene, walked down an aisle of Turkish rugs and eucalyptus branches in baskets to join Kevin, who wore Indochino. The couple’s high school friend Max Tani, now reporter for Business Insider, gave a hilarious and heartwarming speech that chronicled Kara and Kevin’s childhood romance.
After the tearful “I Do’s,” the party kicked-off with a cocktail hour under the ranch’s 100 year old fig tree. Specialty drinks we served out of a little white camper, with either the choice of a “Kara-dise” cocktail or the “Doctor’s Orders”, crafted by Whiskey and June.
Spirits were high as friends and family found their seats at long rustic wood tables highlighted by rose gold chairs from Archive Rentals. At each place setting guests found their names on a dip-dyed name cards from Hannah Schwartz stationer, along with a little cactus in a pot decoupaged in boho fabric scraps, a DIY favor from Kara and her mom. For the table, Crosby + Jon started with a base of custom patterned runners, sourced from local fabric markets by Kara and her bridesmaids. For tabletop, they took a clean modern approach, with the use of ivory stoneware and rose gold flatware. Vintage goblets in amethyst, amber and mauve were added to complement Siren Floral Company’s exquisite centerpieces of Coral Charm peonies, Quicksand roses, and violet wild flowers. The warm California night allowed guests to dine outdoors under the pastel skies and toasted the newlyweds in the glow of the setting sun.
After dinner, the first dance took place inside the weathered wood barn. A stunning cake by Paper Cake Events was cut and later marshmallows were toasted over a fire. Guests cozied up together in bohemian lounge vignettes and danced the night away to a playlist curated by the groom himself. The free-spirited affair was the perfect beginning to the next chapter in this couple’s fairy tale love story.
